Dear All. . .

Greetings from The Aftermath Project, where we have lots of good news to share. Our first book, "War is Only Half the Story, Vol One," published with Aperture (New York) and Mets and Schilt (Amsterdam), has just been released. You can find out more about the publication -- which features the work of our first grant winners and finalists, as well as an incisive essay by noted author Simon Winchester -- on our website:

We've posted several images from the proposals submitted by our 2008 grant winner Kathryn Cook, and our four finalists on the site. Kathryn's winning project, which earned her this year's $25,000 grant, is called "Memory Denied: Turkey and the Armenian Genocide":

We've also added an email sign-up button on the site, and new ways to make tax-deductible contributions to the Aftermath Project (including a PayPal option):

For those of you who might know individuals interested in helping build The Aftermath Project Endowment, please contact me directly. Creating an endowment is critical to the long-term life of the Project; it will enable it to operate as a self-perpetuating institution for many years to come.

I'm happy to announce that there are some new faces at The Aftermath Project: Whitney Johnson, formerly of the documentary photography program at Open Society and now a photo editor at The New Yorker, is working on a part-time basis to oversee exhibitions and other creative outreach. Chris Lee has joined me here in Los Angeles as an incredibly able intern. I'm very, very pleased to be working with them both.

In other news, we're looking forward to our first exhibition, to be held at Roosevelt University's Gage Gallery in Chicago this fall. We feel it's an especially appropriate venue for The Aftermath Project, as the university was founded on social justice principles during the Roosevelt era. Our show opens on September 11th, and continues through January 9th. We'll send out a reminder closer to that date.

Here in Los Angeles, at 8 pm on June 7th, the 10th LA Nude Exhibition will open, with all proceeds going to The Aftermath Project. The exhibition is a longtime tradition organized by Don Weinstein, of Photo Impact, who gave generous support to the Project's first auction in June 2006. This year the show will be held at A&I, 933 N. Highland Ave., Hollywood, CA. Photographers in the exhibition include Greg Gorman, Dennis Hopper, Douglas Kirkland, Julius Schulman, Michael Grecco and Mark Edward Harris. For anyone who's raised eyebrows at the idea of a exhibition of nudes benefiting a grant program dedicated to telling the other half of the story of conflict, Don has a simple answer: "While we're looking at things that are beautiful, we need to remember what's going on in the rest of the world." We agree -- and hope to see you at the exhibition if you're in or around Los Angeles.

Some of you may find yourself surprised to be on this list; I moved several hundred of you from my Bosnia Aftermath newsletter to this newsletter. My work in Bosnia, which is finished, is what led me to create this grant program, which I hope will interest you as much as my work in Bosnia. Many thanks, as always, for your support.

We've sent several copies of "War is Only Half the Story," to those of you who've made donations to the Project; if the book arrives damaged, please let us know and we'll send another copy.

Many of you have asked when the application forms for the 2009 grant will be available. The answer is: sometime in August. We'll send out an announcement at that time.

So, that's all the news for now. Please feel free to write with any questions, or ideas about how The Aftermath Project can continue to grow and help broaden the cultural conversation about the fact that "War is Only Half the Story."

Kind regards,

Sara Terry
